THE River Thames might be fishing poor at the moment but we are lucky to be able to have the Bristol Avon on our doorstep which has been producing some cracking match and pleasure fishing catches.
Sutton Benger on Isis AC waters is one of the more reliable stretches of the river at the moment with pleasure catches going over 100lb of bream together with good bags of tench and perch.
On Sunday in the Isis AC club match it was roach that showed in good numbers after recent heavy rainfall. Nine anglers averaged over 10lb each.
Richard Clarke on peg 136 took plenty of roach but bulked his winning weight of 17-14-0 with two bream to 6-14-0 and a tench.
Paul Rice on 107 had one bream, two tench and roach for 13-4-0 and second place, while Arthur Cook took the best all roach bag from peg 119, a 10-2-8 bag, only half an ounce ahead of Darren Reynolds (10-2-0) and Rob Bullock (9lb of roach).
The John Telling Memorial Rose Bowl match held this year at Lemington Lakes was won by his brother Mick Telling who easily won with a 72-9-0 carp bag. Second was Joe Thompson 32-2-0 and third Steve Reynolds (26-10-0).
BCA match at Ridgeway Fisheries: 1, Sid Webb 21-4-0; 2, Terry Arnold 16lb; 3, Pete Sole 14-12-0; 4, Graham Rose 14-4-0.
There's no stopping Swindon star Gary Laidler at Ridgeway Fisheries at the moment when he chalked up his third open match win on the trot taking a cracking 53-12-0 bag.
Second was John Magoo (27-12-0) and very close in third was Bill Davies (27-10-0). Gary is now on holiday for two weeks which will give a chance for others to take top place.
