TWO local landmarks are battling it out for the title of the county's top heritage spot.
North Meadow in Cricklade and the Swindon Railway Village and Works are among 12 sites shortlisted for the Window On Wilt-shire's Heritage poll. And the people of Wiltshire will make the final decision by voting online.
Project officer Kate Turnbull said: "Television viewers have recently been voting to save Britain's heritage on the BBC's Restoration programme.
"Now people in Wiltshire have a chance to vote for their favourite part of Wilt-shire's heritage.
"There have been many nominations, but 12 historic sites and landmarks have emerged as the front runners.
The poll was launched in 2002 when work started on the Window On Wiltshire's heritage website.
Since then votes have been pouring in and nominations have been whittled down to 12 finalists, with the last phase of voting taking place over the next few weeks.
The other sites vying for the top spot are Avebury, Brunel's Box Tunnel, Figsbury Ring, the Kennet and Avon Canal, Malmesbury Abbey, Old Wardour Castle, Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, Stourhead and the West-bury White Horse.
Cricklade Town Council clerk Margaret Griffiths, said: "We're obviously thrilled the meadow has been shortlisted.
It's a beautiful meadow that attracts thousands of visitors each year.
"We're delighted it's been listed as one of Wiltshire's top heritage sites."
Martha Parry of the Swindon Civic Trust said: "I think it's wonderful the Rail-way Village has been shortlisted.
"It's nice it is being taken seriously as a heritage site."
The winner will be announced when the site is officially launched on September 17.
