I WRITE concerning the name of a parish west of Swindon.

I suggest the parishioners of Lydiard Tregoz(e) should be allowed to use the spelling they prefer without interference, especially as the parish signs, like the boundary stones erected by Purton, Wootton Bassett and Lydiard Millicent, are about parish pride rather than giving important directions.

May I take a turn at being pedantic about spelling?

Bassett Down, in the parish of Lydiard Tregoz(e) as it happens, should be spelt with one t, unlike the other Bassetts.

Ordnance Survey maps show the correct spelling. Newspapers usually misspell this place name.

Similarly, the Kennett villages have two ts, the River Kennet only one.

Long may these idiosyncrasies continue!

Malcolm Titcombe wrote to you in support of Lydiard Tregoz.

In the same letter he questioned the name Lydiard House.

Maps showing Lydiard House place it clearly in Lydiard Millicent whereas the former home of the Bolingbrokes is styled Lydiard Park.
