MAHLE Filter Systems UK, of High Post, which was given the go-ahead by Salisbury district council to expand its manufacturing operation last month, will create 50 new jobs as part of the scheme.

Mahle, which specialises in the production of air, oil and fuel filter systems for car manufacturers, has recorded a first half sales increase of 15 per cent, compared with 2003.

It says planning permission paves the way for it to extend its 17,500 square metre facility by 4,500 square metres, to provide essential warehousing and to achieve its objective of doubling its turnover.

Mahle has expanded its workforce in Salisbury by 30 per cent, to 360 people, since it acquired the Tennex business in 2001.

"The decision by the council will enable us to build on our recent success and should result in an additional 50 permanent jobs," said Rod Small, managing director.

"Any business must continue to grow and evolve and this is particularly true in the automotive industry, which is one of the toughest in the world.

"When the Mahle Group acquired the Tennex business in 2001 it was vulnerable, but in the last three years we have become one of the group's most cost- effective sales, design and manufacturing centres in Europe.

"Everyone has worked very hard to bring the business this far, this fast, and Mahle is firmly focused on maintaining its presence in south Wiltshire and to the creation of quality employment opportunities," he said.

Construction of the extension, which will be in muted colours and fully landscaped, will begin in late August, on completion of legal agreements.
