JOE Breet scored an unbeaten 98 to steer Westbury to a four wicket win at Hanham on Saturday and keep alive their hopes of a top three finish.

The Westbury captain kept his head at a time when his fellow batsmen had lost theirs in pursuit of the 184 run target Hanham had set.

Opening the batting, Breet looked in danger of running out of partners as Westbury collapsed to 53-4 but John Delina (32) and Christian Knott (21) provided a steadying influence.

The South African all-rounder was pleased with the result but admitted it had been a bit to close for comfort.

He said: "We lost a few early wickets and it looked as though we were going to struggle but thankfully we were able to stick it out.

"We have moved up to fifth place in the table and third place is still a possibility, which would be a good achievement."

Hanham elected to bat first and the decision looked a good one as they reached 130-4. But the next four wickets fell for just 48 runs to leave them on 184-8 after 50 overs. Breet took 3-58 and Steve Edwards and Phil Carroll took two wickets apiece.

In reply, Westbury looked in trouble as they lost opener Alex Hart for three and Adam Pothecary for three, leaving them struggling on 16-2.

After the loss of Andy Elliott (22) and Martin Dolman, Delina and Knott steadied the innings as they reached their target.
