A PROPOSAL to remove the altar cross in a Saxon church has worried town councillors.
The planning application by trustees of the Church of St Laurence, Bradford on Avon, a Grade I listed building, includes a request to remove a stone cross put above the altar in the 1930s, as well as to install spotlights to light up two angels on the inside wall of the building and put up display cabinets.
The council believes the cross is of interest as an example of early 20th century restoration and removal would change the appearance of the altar by removing its focal point.
The council's recommendation to West Wiltshire District Council, which has the final say, will be: "The town council has no objection to the works proposed, subject to English Heritage approval, but requests reconsideration of the removal of the altar feature which is a recognisable part of the interior of the church."
