A MAN was arrested after he was was spotted taking pictures up women's skirts in a supermarket.

Staff at the Asda store in West Swindon detained the man after CCTV footage showed him sneaking up to female shoppers and poking a camera phone under their skirts.

Police were called and the 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of taking indecent photographs.

"The man was following women and using a camera phone to take photographs under their skirts,'' said a police spokeswoman.

"Women who may have been subjected to unwanted attention in similar circumstances are asked to contact the police.''

A security guard at the store said: "We have watched him before on the CCTV and we believed he was a purse snatcher.

"He was very close behind the women.

"We have been observing him closely.

"When we realised this morning what he was up to, we arrested him, took him to a secure room and called the police.''

The man was later released on police bail.

Asda spokeswoman Lynsey MacCuish said from the firm's Leeds headquarters: "We would like to congratulate our security staff at Swindon for their quick action and vigilance, which led to the arrest of this man.''
