PURTON'S Ian Williams will represent Wiltshire in the last 32 of the under 25 singles when the men's national bowls finals begin in Worthing this weekend.
The 23-year-old Welsh junior indoor international, who made his Wiltshire debut at Worthing last year in the semi-finals of the Middleton Cup, qualified for Worthing for the first time in the junior singles with a comprehensive 21-8 victory over Salisbury Victoria's Nicholas Heenan.
In the past few years Wiltshire have featured prominently in this event, with Graham Shadwell winning the title in 1999 and Russell Francis finishing as runner-up in 2001.
In his opening match this afternoon, Williams faces the winner of the clash between Yorkshire and Middlesex.
Williams will also be competing on Monday in the fours championships after leading his Purton rink of Dave Hall, Max Holland and Reg Wadsworth to a 30-3 victory over Rodbourne Cheney in the Wiltshire final.
AT Leamington, Wiltshire's involvement in the triples ended in the first round with Egham edging out Corsham and Plymouth Sir Francis Drake beating Devizes 18-16.
In the two wood singles, Linda Kingston beat P Whitehead (Norfolk) 15-6, but then went out to S Jennings (Dorchester) 17-11, while Olive Henery (Westlecot) was beaten by a shot, losing 13-12 to M Calder (Amble).
PURTON are through to the last 16 in the National Top Club competition.
They won the county title with a narrow victory over Box, and then, representing Wiltshire, comfortably defeated Plessey Radar, Isle of Wight, 3-1 in the next round.
Purton will now face Crediton (Devon) in the last 16. They beat Cornwall in the previous round.
The match will be played on Tuesday, August 24 (10am) on the neutral green at Clevedon.
Purton are forced to make one change to their normal line-up against the Devon champions as Deana Gingell is unavailable.
Reserve Dorothy Paish comes into the rinks team to replace skip Gingell, with Jean Comley moving from three to four to skip the quartet.
