THE Fairford branch of the Royal British Legion has announced record figures for this year's Poppy Appeal fundraising.
This year £4,567 was raised locally, an increase of £415 on the previous year.
Brian Newell, secretary, said: "This is a great contribution from a community of 3,000 folk and helped to swell the national Poppy Appeal where the ageing of the ex-service personnel places greater demands on the largely voluntary services." Mr Newell said that money raised would go towards welfare and advice services, transport and direct visits to hospitalised patients.
Today a reception will be held for incoming President Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter at the Plough Inn, Fairford.
