RODBOURNE CHENEY'S bid for glory in the National Fours Championship at Worthing is over.
The quartet of Dave Royle, Rob Petrie, Roy Carter and Gary Morphet went out in the third round.
In their opening match they came from 9-0 down to beat Middlesbrough 22-18. Their cause being aided greatly by a maximum count of eight on the 14th end.
They then faced Kempston Hammers (Bedfordshire).
The match was very tight throughout with Rodbourne just edging home on the 21st and last end.
Cheney trailed 10-7 but then forged into a 15-10 advantage only to be pulled back to 15-15 all. It was then nip and tuck but on the 20th end skip Morphet collected a three to give Cheney a 19-17 lead. Despite a measure for two Cheney only conceded a single on the last end to edge home 19-18.
Their next opponents in round three were Boscombe Cliff (Hampshire) but despite a fine start they went down 22-13.
Morphet's quartet went 8-3 up but then dropped a five. They recovered to lead 11-8 but found temselves 15-13 down after 15 ends and never collected another shot.
Royle and Morphet enjoy a break today from competition before being joined in the national triples tomorrow by Dave Carter when they take on Egham (Surrey B).
Wiltshire's other representatives in the triples, Spencer Melksham, meet Surrey's other side South London in the preliminary round today.
Wiltshire's top bowler, England intenational Graham Shadwell, won the singles at the Bournemouth OPen and teamed up with wife Debbie to win the mixed pairs.
