Ref. 71449-25A GROUP that has carved a niche for itself in wood is hoping for some new members.
Pinehurst Woodcarving Group has been running for about 14 years at Pinehurst People's Centre, but has dwindled to just seven members.
Now the members want to get more people involved so the art of woodcarving is not lost in Swindon.
The treasurer, the appropriately named Peter Woodward, said: "We have made rocking horses for grandchildren, walking sticks for various people, plaques, animals and all sorts.
"We also have a chest of tools and do some pyrography, burning images into wood, and we also do woodturning. To be honest, we cover anything to do with wood."
"Without being arrogant, between us we have accumulated quite a bit of knowledge about woodworking over the years, and we would like to pass that on to other people."
Mr Woodward, 78, worked as a butcher and was also in the army. He took up woodcarving after a car accident about 12 years ago when someone suggested he take up carving and whittling in a bid to get back feeling and power in his right arm.
He joined the Pinehurst group four years ago and said he has not looked back since. Fortunately, the carving helped as part of therapy and part from the odd twinge he has no trouble with it.
The group meets at Pinehurst People's Centre every Thursday from 7pm to 9pm. To go to a first meeting is free, and sessions cost £3 from then on. To find out more about the group contact Mr Woodward on 01793 534347.
