LES Slinn's article on August 4 under the headline walking is easy step on path to good health contained some excellent advice for those making a start on this form of exercise, such as gradually building up the length and pace of your walking.
Walking in the countryside has additional benefits for those who have the stamina to cope with the uneven surfaces and stiles of field paths.
Dr Ross Cameron of the University of Reading has said "For a feeling of well-being we need exposure to plants or green space for a couple of hours a week."
So, walking improves physical and mental health.
The local group of the Ramblers' Association provides a walk in the countryside every weekend.
Les suggested joining a rambling group to have company to walk with and meet new friends.
That also is good advice, though if you prefer to walk with the group and not talk we can respect that wish.
The advantage of going with a group is that the leader knows the route, can help you to appreciate what you are seeing and will get you back to the start.
The ramblers' programme provides walks from three to 14 miles so you can make progress without having to join different clubs as you do.
We shall be having a stand at the Forest Festival at the Lawns, Old Town, on August 28 Or call 01793 740450.
