SAM Allison is upholding the striker's tradition and claiming Chippenham's fifth goal against Dunstable on Saturday, even though he only got the barest of touches on the ball as Ian Herring's header crossed the line.
The 23-year-old had to endure some banter in the bar after the game but Allison is unrepentant.
He said: "I scored it. The ball has come over from the cross and Gary Thorne got a good head on it. Herring then headed it in my direction. It was a great header, but my goal.
"As Herring headed the ball, it touched me on my side. The rules are whoever the ball touched last, it's there goal. Is that not right?"
Herring had a different view on the goal. He said: "No need to ask me whose goal it was. You heard what the speakers said in the stadium.
"The corner came in, Gary Thorne has risen like a salmon, it's come over to me and I headed it in. There is no way Sammy got a touch on it. You know what strikers are like, they will claim any goal they can to get their tally up."
The arguing did not stop in the Dunstable bar. Allison was still trying to claim the goal on the team bus on the way home.
The confident striker was pleased with his second half contribution. He said: "I had a good game. My main asset is my pace.
"Steve White told me to be more composed and I think I was. I hope to get more goals this season, that's what being a striker is all about.
"I did score that goal. Scott Walker got two but one was a penalty so technically I am top goal scorer at the moment."
The ball did appear to touch Allison on the way in but Herring's header looked to be goalbound anyway.
Both players were pleased with their personal and the team's performances last Saturday.
Herring said: "I did really well and scored a goal. The back four have got a good understanding.
"They did try to unsettle us with some harsh tackling but the lads we have at the club now can with stand that."
