POLICE are determined to eradicate the scourge of drugs in west Wiltshire, using a sensitive new detection device.
Corsham nightclub, Lilley's, in Westwells Road, Hawthorn is the latest in a string of venues to take part in the operation to crack down on drugs.
Police carried out 310 tests on clubbers between 9.30pm and 1.30am on Saturday. No arrests were made for possession of drugs.
Of the tests, 20 were positive, and five of those were strong enough to call for a drug search but nobody was found to be in possession of drugs.
The operation was carried out in partnership with the nightclub, using a new device called an Ion Track Itemiser, which detects all class A,B and C drugs, and explosives and is swiped across any surface, including hands and clothes.
Insp Glynn Ashforth from the community safety department at Melksham police station said: "This is the 12th time the Itemiser has been used, but it will definitely not be the last.
"We already have future operations planned in Warminster, Trowbridge and Chippenham."
Chicago Rock in Trowbridge and Buds in Chippenham have previously had checks carried out on the door.
