VISITORS have been flocking to hear church bells ring in the ghost village of Imber for the first time in 60 years.
The bells at St Giles' Church were taken away when the village on Salisbury Plain, was evacuated for Army training in 1943. But thanks to two months of hard work their original sound is echoing in the bell tower once again.
Bell ringing expert David Niven, of All Saints Church, Durring-ton, deciphered the unique peels painted on the walls of the 800-year-old building to produce a seven-minute tape recording. The sound of the bells are now proving a big draw for the village's summer opening, organised by campaign group Friends of Imber Church. The bells will ring until August 30 when Imber closes again to the public.
The group also hopes to hold a fundraising flower show next weekend, but this is now in jeopardy after organiser Ray Tuffin was diagnosed with cancer.
They now need someone who is good with flowers to put it together. If you can help call Paul Brown on (01225) 719291/John Syme on (01985) 846538.
