IF Les Halsey woke up feeling apprehensive about Friday 13th, by the end of the day he was convinced it does not necessarily herald disaster.
For not only did he learn that his daughter Karen had passed her nursing exams, he also marked 40 years' service with a firm of estate agents.
Mr Halsey, from Marlborough, joined Dennis Pocock and Son at the age of 17, and he has stayed with the same company through its changes of ownership as the internal accountant and book-keeper.
On Friday when he walked into Straker & Co's Devizes office he was met with applause. "I had no idea that I'd done the 40 years," he said.
Among those present were John Pocock, son of Dennis Pocock. Director Gordon Straker presented him with a holiday for himself and his wife to Lake Como in Italy, including first-class travel via one of Mr Halsey's passions, trains, and a
Swindon Town Football Club shirt.
