Swindon commuters heading for London are being warned about temporary speed limits on the M4.

A 50mph speed limit is being introduced during roadworks on the M4 in Berkshire between junctions 7 at Cippenham and junctions 8 and 9 at Maidenhead.

The limit is needed to ensure the safety of the workers involved in the M4 communications scheme, including the replacement of signals in the central reservation.

The signs advising of the speed limit have been put up this week and will remain until the scheme is completed in April 2005.

The limit, where traffic management is in place and people are working, will be enforced by mobile safety cameras.

Highways Agency area manager John Rylett said: "This 50mph limit is being introduced for the safety of the workforce and that of drivers using this busy route.

"We request that drivers keep within the speed limit.

"The police will be enforcing this speed limit on this busy route.

"The Highways Agency is currently running a safety in roadworks campaign to highlight that speeding near roadworks can kill and we urge drivers to adhere to the signs."
