Ref. 71877-157COPING with a newborn baby can be a difficult time whether you are an experienced parent or a first-time mother.
That's why the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) has launched a scheme to help Swindon parents face the challenges of pregnancy, childbirth and parenting.
The charity can put mums in touch with women who have overcome similar difficulties to the ones they are going through.
The service, which is called the Experience Register, is free, confidential and available at the end of a telephone.
Co-ordinator Hannah Perkins wished a similar scheme had been in place after she gave birth to her three-year-old daughter Rachel.
The 36-year-old said: "It's quite a simple idea. We have people on our register who are happy to share their experiences.
"Talking to someone who has had the same difficulty but has come out the other end can be an enormous reassurance for people who may not be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
To use the service parents should contact the register co-ordinator, explain their situation and then they will be put in touch with an adviser.
Hannah, who has another daughter Ella, one, said: "People can come to us with a wide range of problems.
"A common problem is breastfeeding. It's a misconception that breastfeeding happens naturally and a bit of advice can help.
"Having a baby that cries a lot can also be an isolating experience. It can lead parents constantly feeling tired and low.
"It's just good to hear from somebody that it's just a phase your child is going through.
"Talking to a stranger can also be more beneficial than talking to friends or family members especially if someone thinks they have post natal depression.
"They may fear people will judge them for admitting this or worry people close to them think they are failing as a mother."
The NCT is also looking for more people to be on their register. If you have had a difficult parenting experience and either need support or want to help others then contact Hannah on 01793 513191.
