CHIPPENHAM'S central defender Ian Herring hopes get up front and bag a few goals this season.
Herring, 20, appears up front on many occasions and has one contentious goal to his name already this year.
He scored a header in the 6-0 win over Dunstable in the opening game of the season despite Sam Allison claiming that it come off him. Herring said: "That was my goal but I can get a few more this season.
"I'm good with my head so I always like to go up for set pieces and think I can get some goals. I usually get a head on the ball so there is no reason why I can't do that at the other end."
Herring thinks that in every team the strikers cannot do all of the work up front. He said: "Last year I didn't get many. We were relying on the strikers James Constable and Charlie Griffin. Good teams get goals from all areas of the pitch."
Herring, nicknamed Spud by his teammates because of his shaven head, said he is working on scoring in training.
He said: "We do a lot of work on set pieces and I am always involved. I usually go up for corners and free kicks and win my fair share of them."
Herring had a good chance against Rugby on Saturday but his right-footed effort went wide. He said: "We had loads of corners on Saturday and I got up there to score. I had a good chance but it went wide of goal. I will get a few this season."
Manager Steve White is pleased that Herring goes up and wants to score and thinks that will add depth to his team.
He said: "Ian is very capable of scoring goals, so is Gary Thorne. They both had efforts on Saturday and are excellent in the air.
"They were both exceptional against Rugby. This is always good as it gives me extra options in front of goal, especially with set pieces. When defenders score goals it is always good for the team."
