OUR youngest junior cricketers had a rare taste of competitive play when Calne Cricket Club held their first junior under tens competition on Sunday.

Four cricket teams entered the competition from Wiltshire to battle it out for Calne Youth Trust shield, which was donated by the Trust.

Calne Youth Trust is a centre for young people in Calne to meet up, play computer games and mainly get off the streets.

Teams from Calne, Wootton Bassett, Biddestone and Bishops Cannings all played each other in an exciting round robin. The teams were made up of eight cricketers and the innings lasted for eight overs.

After two games all of the teams had won one game and lost a game, which meant that they all had the opportunity to win the competition. In the event of two teams finishing even the team that took the most wickets would have won the tournament.

After the last games, Calne had won their final match against Wootton Bassett and had taken 11 wickets in all. This meant it all came down to the final overs of the last game, where Biddestone were taking on Bishops Cannings.

Bishops Cannings were on for the win and they needed to take seven wickets to win the competition.

They could only manage five wickets, which meant the host club took the trophy.

Chairman of the Calne Cricket Club youth section was pleased at how their first ever under ten competition went.

He said: "As they are so young there is not much competitive cricket going on for the kids of this age group, so it was a great experience for all the children.

"All the teams that I invited to this competition were delighted to attend as this provided their teams with some competitive games. It was good as a coaching session as well. The kids learned alot about the game."

The player of the tournament award went to Tom Allsop, nine, of Bishops Cannings for his all round ability.

The trophies were presented by Calne Mayor Carol O'Gorman. The youngsters also had the chance to see how fast their bowling was thanks to the use of a speed gun. Greg Davis, 10, of Wootton Bassett, was the fastest when he was clocked at 44 mph.
