THE annual mixed galas organised by the Wiltshire Bowlers Joint Council produced contrasting finishes in the two galas staged locally.

Purton edged out Box at Supermarine on disciplines in the final after the two sides were tied on aggregate shots.

But at Swindon Bowls Club in the final, Corsham enjoyed a convincing 8-2 points victory over Chippenham Town.

At each gala two points were awarded for a discipline win and four for an overall shot victory.

At Supermarine, both Purton and Box suffered a big loss in their sectional games but still qualified for the final.

Box went down to Cooper-Avon 7-3 but bounced back to win the group easily.

Purton lost 8-2 to Shrivenham but this group was extremely tight.

Host club Supermarine beat Shrivenham 8-2 but then lost to Purton by the same score.

It therefore came down to points gained against the other group side Highworth.

Purton took 10, while the other two only gained eight, putting Purton into the final.

Purton won the triples easily by six shots and the pairs by three against Box in the final.

They crashed by nine in the fours which tied the overall scores at 40-40, but they took the honours by virtue of the pairs and triples wins.

At Swindon it was far more clear cut, with Chippenham Town easily winning group one by 10 points and Corsham the other by 12 points.

The final saw Corsham take a comfortable success, winning the pairs and triples easily and only going down by a shot in the fours.

At the other gala staged at Amesbury, the honours went to Wilton, who beat Spencer Moulton in the final.

The three successful teams at Amesbury, Supermarine and Swindon won the first prize of £100 while the runners-up received £50.

All the proceeds from the three events, which is expected to be around £1,000, will go to bowls benevolent funds in Wiltshire and also to the Joint Council.

Sponsors for the three events included Cooper-Avon Tyres Ltd, BAW Consultancy Ltd and the Swindon Evening Advertiser.
