MANAGER Kelvin Highmore says that the best is yet to come from young midfielder Kevin Banks after an impressive performance on Saturday.

Banks, 20, scored Calne's first two goals inside 35 minutes and ran the game. Highmore has been extremely pleased with the midfielder's performance so far. He said: "He is on top of his game and scored a peach on Saturday. I don't think the keeper even saw it. Banks and Danny Jones complement each other in midfield well. They both covered every inch of the field and both had great games for us."

Banks' first goal came from a Jake Jefferies thrown-in. It was flicked on by Matt Pratley to Banks, who swept the ball home from ten yards.

Wellington striker Alexis Piper had a chance to bring the scores level a few minutes later. He was through on goal with just keeper Darryl Simms to beat but the Calne shotstopper collected it low at the striker's feet.

Banks grabbed the goal of the game on 30 minutes when the ball came out to him on the edge of the box from a James Lye corner. Banks struck a beautiful volley into the top corner of the Wellington net.

It took Calne just 12 minutes into the second half to extend their lead. Banks was involved again as his chip down the left wing found Neil Grant. He appeared to be about to play the ball across the area but instead he hit a low angled drive into corner of the Wellington net.

Ten later Calne netted again with Matt Pratley supplying the cross for Glen Armstrong. He leapt up between two defenders and directed a clever header home from six yards.

Calne notched a fifth on 75 minutes when Armstrong latched onto a defensive slip up to drag the ball on to his left foot and easily slip the ball into the net for his second of the game.

Calne have now scored 13 goals in three games, much to the delight of the manager. Highmore said: " Confidence is a big thing. We are supporting our strikers and not letting them do all the work. Banks has three from midfield, Grant has two, everyone is chipping in. We are defending as a team now but also attacking as a team."

More importantly Calne kept their first clean sheet of the season as they leapt to top of the Screwfix division one table.

Apart from the early effort the Calne keeper was not tested as the back line held strong. Calne are scoring but was extra pleased with his defence after this performance. He said: "We conceded two sloppy goals in the other two games. We showed mental strength to keep a clean sheet when we were ahead. This is a little more pleasing than scoring five goals. Everyone worked hard together."

Calne travel to Chard's difficult slopping pitch on Saturday. Highmore said: "They are a tough nut to crack as they are used to playing on that hilly pitch. We will have to take our chances that we create in that game."

Calne are injury free but will be losing Neil Grant due to a family wedding.
