Bank Holiday drivers face major delays on the M4 around Swindon as families flock to the coast. Despite the expected wet weather, people are expected to make the usual holiday pilgrimage to the seaside.

Highways Agency chief executive Archie Robertson said: "Drivers can make their journey easier by planning their route and keeping up to date with the latest road conditions.

"The agency will be lifting as many roadworks as possible to help drivers get to their destinations more freely."

The agency, which is responsible for England's motorways and major trunk roads, reminded drivers to stop for a 15-minute break at least once every two hours to improve their concentration and beat tiredness.

Meanwhile, the RAC warned that many motorists could be seriously risking their lives by unnecessarily stopping on the hard shoulders of motorways and dual carriageways.

RAC patrols urged drivers to remember that the hard shoulders of motorways and dual carriageways should only be used in an emergency when there is no other option but to stop.
