A PROPOSAL for an interpretive panel on The Common at Marlborough setting out its history has been backed by town councillors.
It idea came from the Marlborough Area Development Trust (MADT), whose role includes improving tourism facilities in the Marlborough community area.
Coun David Parker, a member of MADT, told the town council recreation committee on Monday that the trust's environmental group wanted to promote the district's areas of interest.
One suggestion was for an interpretive panel setting out the history of Marlborough's common.
Coun Parker said Marlborough Local History Group was interested in helping carry out the research into the history of The Common from its Civil War involvement through to the Americans in the Second World War.
He said it was suggested that the panel could be sited at the side of Free's Avenue.
Committee members welcomed the offer from MADT to provide the information panel but stipulated that the final wording had to be agreed by the council.
Coun Parker said it was planned to erect another interpretive panel by the River Kennet in the town explaining the course of the river from its source as far as Hungerford.
