CLARK KENT (a.k.a. Superman) knew that to get by you have to change.

The mild-mannered newspaper reporter became a superhero in a jiffy the change was everything, and the secret of his success.

The same is true in business with a national skills shortage, rising interest rates and the spectre of oil prices rising it seems there is a conspiracy to shackle manufacturers and many bosses are finding they need to develop, and quickly.

To help them along Business Link Berkshire and Wiltshire (BLBW) has introduced not compulsory phoneboxes, but a specialist programme for Swindon and Wiltshire firms to improve critical business areas such as quality, cost control and employee development.

It is especially for manufacturers employing less than 250 people who can demonstrate they have the capacity and drive to grow.

Steve Huntridge, a sector specialist from BLBW, said: "The same environmental elements and concerns about levels of profit and productivity are constant features of running a manufacturing business.

"The important thing for owners and managers to know is they need not be under constant pressure to find new ways to combat the negative influences on their business.

"Opportunities exist for expert third-party advice to help manufacturers pinpoint appropriate best practice solutions and implement changes that will effect real improvement to their bottom line."

Every manufacturer that qualifies for the programme will receive up to £5,00 in matched funding.

In addition, they will receive a free evaluation of their competitive performance against other companies, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, as well as access to experts.
