Reference Caroline Giles' letter defending Tesco's decision to close the Brook Road, Trowbridge, Post Office.
I live at the top of the Broadmead/Walwayne Court estate. As soon as the possible closure of Brook Road Post Office was announced various local residents asked me what Trowbridge Town Council could do to ensure that it stayed open. One neighbour collected signatures for a petition we have nearly 1,000 now.
Each week at least five people phone me to ask for an update Diana Griggs was one of these and I usually get two or three letters a week on the topic all wanting the post office retained.
At the suggestion of a local resident, the town council made a written proposal to Tesco that if they were to slightly extend the premises then we would all be in win/win situation.
Residents could keep their post office remember, Tesco claimed that they were reluctantly going to close it only because the premises were too small and Tesco could offer the extra product lines they claimed were essential for their new format store. I even went to the trouble of checking out potential planning problems with the district council. There were none.
It is most regretful that to date Tesco has not had the common courtesy to reply to the Town Council regarding this possible way forward. Nor are Tesco willing to meet local councillors to discuss the issue and other possible solutions.
Two weeks ago the national Post Office organisation wrote to the district council stating that Tesco were determined to close Brook Road Post Office. Yet this week the local Tesco superstore attempted a cack-handed public relations gesture of offering to fund an ephemeral street fair. Please let's get real! Tesco, is it really too late to talk and work together in the interest of the community?
