THE Mechanics' Institute could be about to get a new lease of life as a hotel and conference centre.

The building, which this year is celebrating its 150th anniversary, has been the subject of a long planning saga.

Now it could be the key to Swindon's future prosperity, with the introduction of levels of hotel service not previously seen in this country.

The plan is to convert the building in Emlyn Square into a hotel, conference centre, restaurant and apartments.

While owned by businessman Mathew Singh's company Forefront Estates, it would be managed by Swindon Chamber. It is hoped to be running by next February.

Chief executive Dennis Grant said: "This will have service not seen outside the Far East and America and it will support Swindon Council in driving inward investment.

"It will convince companies thinking about moving to Swindon that we are serious about business."

The other aim of the centre is to help new firms get established and also entrepreneurs to get their ideas off the ground.

Mr Grant said: "This will be a one-stop shop for help, with different organisations under one roof."

Swindon Council's planning committee meets on Tuesday and will be deciding whether to grant listed building consent and planning permission for the south end of the building.

English Heritage has said the plan submitted for the south end of the scheme is sympathetic to the Railway Village and, providing detailed information about renovation is provided, and the plan fits with Government guidance, it does not foresee objections. But objections have been raised by residents and the New Mechanics' Institution Preservation Trust.

Last September Swindon Council granted permission for the building to be converted into a restaurant, hotel, flats, and leisure complex, subject to further details.

When Forefront Estates produced plans just before Christmas last year, there was criticism of a glass tower in the middle of the north and south ends.

On the same day it was due to be voted on by the council, the Office Of The Deputy Prime Minister ruled it would need special authorisation.

A decision on that application is expected soon. This hotel and conference plan is a separate application.
