MAGISTRATES ordered a thief to do community punishment after he admitted walking out of the Nike store with a pair of trainers.
Jason Daniels was spotted by staff at the shop in the McArthur Glen outlet centre in Swindon and when he left, setting off the alarm, they chased after him, said prosecutor Lynne Henderson.
They tried to get him to return but he threw the £62 trainers at them and ran.
Daniels also admitted driving while disqualified and having no insurance.
Mrs Henderson told the magistrates he was spotted parking a car in Castle Street, Cirencester, by a police officer who later discovered that he had also been banned from driving.
Anne Frost, defending, said the shoplifting was an impulsive action rather than a sophisticated or planned crime.
She said Daniels, of Lawrence Road, Cirencester, had a background of violence and drugs,
But she said he had responded to community penalties in the past and managed to overcome his addiction.
The bench imposed a 150-hour punishment order for the driving offence, to run consecutively and ordered him to pay £138 prosecution costs.
There was no separate penalty for having no insurance.
