NEARLY 300 drivers have been caught speeding on the M4 near Swindon. The motorists were caught by cameras set up to protect workers laying fibre optic cables between Swindon and junction 18 at Bath.

Speed checks have been carried out since August 9 to enforce a 50mph limit.

Ten of those caught face a court appearance, mostly because they were clocked doing excessively high speeds.

A further 100 speeders are thought to have been captured on a film yet to be analysed.

Nick Blencowe, of the Wiltshire Safety Camera Partnership, said: "Nationally, one person is killed almost every week in accidents at roadworks, and 78 a week are injured.

"By enforcing the temporary speed limits through the roadworks, we hope to prevent injuries and deaths.

"We also hope our efforts so far will have reminded drivers that the speed they're doing can mean the difference between life and death.

"A temporary speed limit is just as important as any other."

Speed checks will continue until the work is completed in about six months.
