THE speed limit on Cricklade Road and a short stretch of Cirencester Way is to be reduced from a 40mph to a 30mph zone.
The Traffic Regulation Order has been advertised and it is hoped that the new speed limit will be introduced at the end of September.
The proposed change will start at the Copse park and ride and run along Cricklade Road to a point 165 metres into Cirencester Way, just beyond the pedestrian crossing.
This part of Cricklade Road runs through a built up residential area with schools and retail outlets on either side.
The injury accident record along this stretch of road is poor.
There were 52 accidents in a three year period from March 2001 until February this year, resulting in 68 casualties, eight of which were serious. There were also 10 child casualties of which three were serious.
Swindon Council spokesman Gavin Calthrop said that the council believes reducing the speed limit will have a positive impact on reducing accidents and casualties while reducing noise.
The new scheme will include:
High visibility gateways on entering the new limit at the Copse P&R and Cirencester Way.
Four temporary new speed limit reminder signs.
Two solar powered vehicle activated signs which will detect vehicles exceeding the speed limit and flash up a reminder.
