CHILDREN have been making the most of the last chance to let off summer holiday steam before heading back to the classroom.

The spectacular Notting Hill Carnival was the theme for fun activities organised by Leapfrog's Swindon nursery.

The famous London street party is celebrating its 40th birthday in style this Bank Holiday weekend. Youngsters from the St Andrew's Ridge nursery donned fancy dress and had their faces painted to recreate a hint of the atmosphere. They enjoyed dancing and party food, and made masks and steel drums.

Nursery manager Morag Puffet said: "Not only were the activities fun for all the children, but they also had the chance to learn about one of Europe's most important arts festivals."

Youngsters in Penhill were also having fun as the holidays drew to a close. And while they had their faces painted and gobbled burgers from the barbecue, parents pledged their support for an adventure playground scheme.

The Twist project aims to give Penhill children their very own adventure playground. Campaigners want the swings, rides and climbing frames to be built at the Seven Fields recreation area. Parents say the estate is in desperate need of better play equipment.

Much has been removed due to wear and tear, and a popular paddling pool had to close because of persistent vandalism.

Jo Myers, secretary of the campaign, was impressed with the support from parents. "Everyone agrees that we desperately need something like this in Penhill," she said. "We are not saying the playground would solve all our problems, but it would get the children off the streets." For more information call Jo on 07759 739989.
