A HOMELESS man who has been living in his car was charged with burglary after his DNA was found at the scene of a break-in, a court heard.

Bruce Hudson, 43, stole a chequebook from Swindon Roofing centre and then used it to try and get hundreds of pounds in cash

He also tried to buy groceries and some fuel for his car, Swindon magistrates heard.

Hudson, of no fixed address admitted the break-in.

He also admitted obtaining £492 by deception, using the stolen chequebook at three filling stations and also making off without payment at two more.

He was charged after DNA found in blood smears at the break-in was matched to his, said prosecutor Stacey Turner.

The defendant, who also askked for eight similar offences to be taken into consideration, admitted everything to police when he was arrested

He said he was desperate because he was unemployed, he had no home and no way of supporting himself, she said.

Stephen Weighell, defending, said most of the deceptions only involved small amounts of money for petrol and food.

He said Hudson did not have a good relationship with his family.

He had been living in his car since he left Davis House, in Swindon, three months before.

He said Hudson had previuously made two attempts at suicide.

And he had also told people he would prefer to be dead.

The bench adjourned sentencing until October 20 for reports to be prepared. Hudson was remanded in custody.
