TOWN councillors are looking into the possibility of reopening a market in Malmesbury.
Mayor Coun Patrick Goldstone said: "The working group agrees in principle that a weekend market should return but we have not proposed a particular day. While we have our own ideas we cannot decide without talking to customers, traders and residents.
"Consultations are now taking place and will continue."
Coun Goldstone added that there was also a suggestion the council could run the market but he had concerns about where the stall fittings could be stored and how they would be transported.
He said: "I am not convinced the working party has thought through the problems of holding the market in-house."
Coun John Bowen supported the reopening of the market, but called for further consultation.
"I think running it in-house is something to be looked at because we can make proper revenue for this council," he said.
"A public meeting to gauge local opinion is something to do as soon as possible."
Coun Judy Jones suggested the Wiltshire Association of Farmers' Markets should be approached if the town council pressed ahead. She said: "I don't know how to run a market and I would be very careful before supporting something that may put us in the firing line more than we should be."
