STRIKER Glenn Armstrong went to the top of the Screwfix scoring charts with a superb double to put Calne back on top of the league on Tuesday.
A penalty in the first half and a blistering strike in the second was enough to beat the team from Salisbury Plain, who were unlucky not to have made it onto the score sheet.
Manager Kelvin Highmore said that there is a great atmosphere at the club. He said: "Everyone is buzzing after this win. We are back on top of the league and the reserves are third in their table."
Highmore was worried before the game. He said: "This is a derby game and we usually come unstuck against Shrewton. They have a superb striker in Dean Foot who gets 40 goals a season, I'm delighted to get a clean sheet and take the win."
The home side took only 15 minutes to score when defender Darren Smart was shoved at the back post. Armstrong stepped up and tucked the ball away from the insuing penalty..
Calne new boy Ben Highmore had an opportunity to extend their lead on 28 minutes. A flick on from Armstrong released Highmore, he unleashed a venomous strike that smacked against the post and out for a corner.
Shrewton's first opportunity came on 35 minutes when striker Foot hit a superb free kick over the wall. Keeper Darryl Simms stretched high to tip the ball over the crossbar.
The second half started with end-to-end action, although neither team could find a way through the defence.
That was until the 53rd minute when veteran Robbie Lardner seized possession of the ball near the centre spot and sent a ball to Highmore down the right. The youngster then curled a ball with the outside of his boot to Armstrong, but the Calne front man could not direct his header underneath the bar.
The visitors had their best chance of the game on 63 minutes when Jesse Walters found himself 10 yards away from goal, Simms pulled off a terrific save to deny him.
Calne responded immediately and went straight up the other end to score their second. Lardner skipped the two challengers and set up Armstrong who finished well from eight yards.
Highmore thought that his team performed to the best of their potential. He said: "I could not have asked for more from my players."
Calne's next game is against second place Radstock on Saturday. This top of the table clash is important to the manager. He said: "It is important to retain our home record."
Calne's youth team are in action on Sunday in the FA youth cup. They will be facing Bridgwater at Bremhill View, the team that knocked Malmesbury out in the first round.
