AFTER being beaten in last season's final by Trowbridge, Corsham manager Colin Bush wants his side to lay the ghosts of defeat to rest this time around.
"We did not do ourselves proud in last season's final and I want the players to put the record straight this time around."
Corsham breezed through to the second round on Saturday with a convincing victory against the side from the Screwfix Division One. Debutant Tony Colbourne started his Corsham career in sizzling form when he opened the scoring in the first half. Striker Alan Webb scored Corsham's second with a minute to go in a game of few chances.
Bush thought that his team looked comfortable during the whole match. He said: "It was important to get a result after the Newport County (FA Cup) game. We dominated in terms of possession but there were not that many chances in the game. I think Tony and Alan Griffin are going to form a formidable partnership up front."
Corsham had most of the possession and did apply pressure on Shrewton although they could not find a way through the visitors' back line.
The only decent shot of the first half produced a goal on 25 minutes when striker Colbourne was fouled with a tackle from behind just inside the Corsham half. Left back Dave Hopkins took the free kick and hit a long ball up to Colbourne who headed the ball into the net.
Shrewton supporters at the game could have been forgiven for thinking they were waiting for a bus. They sat for an hour anticipating their team's first goal scoring opportunity, and then two came at once.
The first was on 60 minutes when their striker picked up the ball and drove it over the bar from 20 yards.
Two minutes later Corsham keeper Craig Chaplin was called upon to pull off a double save, he parried a long range effort to the feet of midfielder Jesse Walters, but Chaplin recovered from his first save to push Walters' shot round the post.
Bush then made two substitutions on 80 minutes in an attempt to freshen up the attack. He brought off Toby Colbourne who took a knock to his hip and put on Alan Webb.
Colbourne's injury is not serious and he should be back in the starting line up on Saturday. Bush also replaced Alan Griffin with fellow striker Gary Blackwood.
The substitutions seemed to work as Webb sealed the win on 89 minutes. He beat the offside trap to run through and bury the ball into the back of the net.
The Shrewton keeper got a finger to it but could not stop it flying into the net.
Bush admits that he is looking forward to getting back to the Screwfix games. Corsham are second from bottom in the league but have five games in hand over most teams.
He said: "If we can take our cup form into the league then I can see ourselves climbing up that table quickly. Our last league game was on August 25, and after some successful cup games, the players are raring to get stuck back into the league."
The Corsham players have a two week rest before their next game against Backwell in the FA Vase on October 23.
