Devizes avoided their customary poor start on Monday to dwin a passionate derby and go through to the second round.
The away team took the lead through Brain Kayll in the first half and had a penalty saved before Melksham came back to level the scores through striker John O'Mera. Devizes booked their place in the next round of the cup competition for the two Screwfix leagues with goals from forward Dave Lloyd and ex-Melksham striker Dave Macey.
Godley was delighted to be in the next round. He said: "It is great to win a cup match, it is even better to win a local derby. I think we can put a run together in this cup."
Melksham manager Nigel Tripp was extremely disappointed with the game. He said: "I thought that there were two poor sides out there. Unfortunately we were the poorest. There was no good football played, the ball spent most of the time in the air."
For the first time in five games Devizes did not go behind in the first half when Kayll headed in a corner on 30 minutes.
Devizes had a penalty on 40 minutes when defender Jason Lunt handled the ball.
Right back Nick Mooney stepped up to take the penalty, but keeper Gareth Evans made a fine diving save.
Melksham were level on 60 minutes when centre back Steve Peglar crossed in a free kick, the ball dropped in front of O'Mera who headed it in.
The home side almost took the lead ten minutes later when Jamie Harrison headed the ball over the bar.
Devizes were back in front on 75 minutes when a long clearance from goalkeeper Andy King fell to Melksham defender Simmon Allison. He took too much time on the ball and striker Macey dispossessed him and fired in from 18 yards.
Mike Heyward threaded a perfect pass to Lloyd to finish the game on 85 minutes. Lloyd ran on to the pass and lifted the ball over Evans who was diving at Lloyd's feet.
Godley said: "Finally, we did not give ourselves a mountain to climb. We dominated the first half and carried that performance through to the second."
Devizes next game is at home to Bridgwater on Saturday in the league.
