GAZETTE & HERALD: Calne Town Council is set to build two new sporting facilities for the public after announcing plans at last week's development control committee meeting.
The facilities at Bremhill View and Hillcroft Playing Fields are to include one tennis court and a multi-use games area and two tennis courts and a multi-use games area respectively.
Multi-use games areas provide facilities to cater for netball, basketball and five-a-side football as well as an additional area for tennis.
The town council said that no building at Bremhill View would start until Calne Town Football Club had moved to the Beversbrook playing fields.
Town clerk Ann Kingdon said when she started ten years ago, the town was 26 acres short of recreational space.
With the new developments in the north of the town, the shortage may have increased.
She said of the plans: "It's particularly because of the shortage. It's something the town council have been working on for the last seven years,"
"That land is designated as recreational land."
Mrs Kingdon said she had written to Calne Tennis Club, who use the tennis courts that are currently at Hillcroft, to explain the situation.
"We will be working with them for their needs," she said.
"It's helping to meet the documented shortfall of 26 acres of recreational land and it's providing additional facilities for all age groups in the town."
