14312/1THE big-hearted people of Devizes are being asked help research into breast cancer and commemorate a local victim of the disease at the same time.
All 160 tickets to a fundraising disco, table top sale and auction at Wiltshire police headquarters in London Road on Saturday were sold, raising £1,870 for Breast Cancer Care.
The event was organised by Catherine Drage, of Edward Road, Devizes, in memory of her sister-in-law Wendy, who died in February 2003, aged 33.
Mrs Drage said: "We wanted to do something to raise money for the charity and to help keep Wendy's memory fresh."
The money raised will help fund research and the donation will be recognised by a silver plaque in Wendy's name at the headquarters of Breast Cancer Care.
But Mrs Drage added: "We think Devizes can do better than that." And now the family is intent on raising £3,000, enough to qualify for a gold plaque
"We thought we would give people who couldn't make the dance the chance to contribute to the charity," said Mrs Drage. "There are still far too many women dying of breast cancer and the more we can do to help research into curing it the better."
Among the local businesses to contribute to the success of the disco evening were Wadworth's, Duck's, Iceland, Tesco, Morrison's, Greggs, The Emporium, Spirit, several Devizes market traders, The Earth Collection, Tino's, Bengal Bite, Reeve the Bakers, Hygrade Foods, Alex Duffey, Somerfield, The Crown, Hayden's Bakeries and Dave Erwood's fruit and veg.
