Last week, for the first time in ages my wife and I watched a West Wiltshire District Council car park officer attach a fine notice to a car parked in Lovemead car park in Trowbridge.

As it was such an unusual event we walked over and noticed that although the car had a parking ticket it had run 30 minutes over the leaving time displayed. The naughty motorist now has to pay a stiff fine.

It is unusual for council parking meters in Trowbridge to even record the correct day and date, let alone the right time. But the irony of the situation is that only law abiding people ever get fined.

The best way to avoid payment is to park illegally on double yellow lines or on the pavement in the street, which some people do for several hours each day.

You can even park all day outside the Civic Centre if you get there early enough, but don't go into the old Tesco car park for more than two hours or you might get fined.

Am I crazy or is law enforcement in this country upside down?
