VILLAGERS in Staverton are a step closer to having their own district centre after councillors approved plans for four shops and 14 flats on land north of Thestfield Drive.
West Wiltshire District Council's planning committee gave their approval to the scheme, drawn up by Persimmon Homes as part of the housing development at the marina.
The local centre plans were delayed despite being given permission in November, after planners realised that an area to be left undeveloped for an underground sewer needed to be wider than was at first thought.
Parish councillors in Staverton objected to the latest application, drawing up a list of 10 reasons why it should be turned down.
Their objections ranged from a lack of parking facilities for the 14 flats, the location of recycling and rubbish bins and arrangements made for delivery lorries.
In a report to the committee, West Wiltshire District Council planning officers said it would be 'unreasonable' to refuse permission as a similar scheme had been approved in November 2003.
Councillors voted through the application at a meeting on Thursday.
