Bassett under 16s were surprised at Basingstoke on Sunday.
Bassett broke the deadlock with a lineout drive hooker Ben Stew crossing. Russell Barstow missed the difficult conversion. Basingstoke crossed for a 7-5 lead at half-time.
After the break missed tackles allowed Basingstoke to go further ahead 14-5 and soon after a cruel bounce fooled the Bassett defence.
Bassett won several penalties in Basingstoke's 22 and Ben Stew scored his second which Barstow converted to cut the deficit to 21-12.
Bassett's Simon Hutchins charged down a kick to the touch down. Barstow converted but it ended 21-19.
Bassett under 14s came close to avenging their 45-0 defeat to Witney last season, before losing 32-26 away. Witney ran in three before Bassett responded through Oli Stavrakakis, who kicked the conversion. Witney got two more tries to lead 25-7.
Kenny Matthews scored two quick tries, the second of which Stavrakakis converted. Mike Ainsworth then ran in, Stavrakakis doing the honours for a one-point lead. But Witney came back to score a converted try.
