A SWINDON research council is funding research into scanning space for rogue asteroids.
The Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, at North Star, is funding astronomers to track objects which could pose a potential threat and protect the Earth from a potentially disastrous impact.
Scientists from the UK Astrometry and Photometry Programme have access to telescopes in the Hawaiian Islands and Australia.
Project leader, Dr Alan Fitzsimmons, said: "If we're going to be hit by one of these things we need as much information as possible."
