CHIPPENHAM won a disappointing Southern League derby in dense fog at Cirencester last night.

The Bluebirds were 1-0 winners thanks to Scott Walker's first-half penalty, but neither side looked like Premier Division title candidates in the wretched playing conditions.

Ciren boss Brian Hughes said: "It was only the second time this season I had the feeling we weren't going to score.

"We showed lots of endevour but at the end of the day it was two average sides having a go at each other."

Opposite number Steve White said: "We were quite happy, winning the game, to have got it finished. I felt our passages of play deserved us the 1-0 victory."

Walker's decisive spot-kick arrived in the 16th minute after an apparent push from Darren Robison on Martin Paul.

At least I think it was a push it was difficult to tell with with visibility down to about 20 yards.

Ciren's Gareth Hopkins had an effort cleared off the line and Shaun Wimble seeing his volley tipped wide by Mark Hervin.

Chippenham's James Constable teed up Gary Horgan in the second half but his goal-bound effort was scrambled clear.

Robison had a close-range shot blocked by Hervin at the other end and Simon Charity thought he made it 2-0 late on but his strike was ruled out for offside.

Elsewhere, Wootton Bassett were beaten 3-2 at home by Slimbridge in the Norman Matthews Cup. Matty Bennett and Stu Hemsley scored for Bassett.

Supermarine travel to league leaders Taunton Town tonight. They welcome back Steve Jenkins and Dave Hunt after the pair missed the trip to Corby. Captain Steve Davies picked up a knock on Saturday and will undergo a late fitness test.
