GAZETTE: FRANK and Rosemary Weston celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last week, more than 60 years after falling madly in love on the netball court at school.
The couple, of Yewstock Crescent West, Chippenham, celebrated with a family meal at the Plough. Their three children, Clive, Lin and Dawn, and seven grandchildren joined them.
Seventy-one year old Mr Weston worked for Westinghouse for 48 years, but when he first started his apprenticeship there he had to go on a day release to school.
The Secondary Modern School, on Cocklebury Road, which is now Chippenham College, is where they spotted each other across the netball court.
"I was attracted to her and it just went from there," Mr Weston said.
"Her friend wanted me but I told her I wasn't interested and that I wanted Rose."
In true first date tradition, the couple went to the cinema.
At the beginning of their relationship, in the early 1950s, Mr Weston played football for
Chippenham Town and Chippenham United and he won the sports day cup at his work three times.
Mrs Weston was manager of Carol Racing in Chippenham High Street for 30 years until she retired.
She now spends most her time competing in the nationals and playing bowls for Wiltshire.
