DISTRICT councillor John Thomson has forked out £220 of his own money for an application to grant Malmesbury a temporary overflow car park, which he hopes will be in place before next spring.

Coun Thomson said he was so fed up with no answers coming from a district council working group, he decided to put his money where his mouth is.

"Sometimes you have got to have some direct action and it does annoy me when no one gives straight answers," he said.

Coun Thomson said after a working group meeting he felt the car parking problem was not going to be solved for the Spring so he entered the application himself earlier.

"It's exactly the same application. I am not saying this is the complete solution to the parking," he said.

Coun Ross Henning, the lead member for car parking, said when he heard the news he was surprised and his intention is to solve the parking problem.

"We are in plenty of time for an application to go in late this year or January or February next year," he said.

"I wanted to discuss this at the car parking working group on Monday because I want everybody with me.

"Car parking is a district responsibility and not just a Malmesbury responsibility."

Town mayor Patrick Goldstone said Coun Thomson would now not be able to sit on the development control committee that makes the decision. He could speak but couldn't vote on it.
