Malmesbury Town Council is celebrating the news that proposals for development of the Malmesbury Outdoor Pool site and Newton Grove Play Area scheme will be reviewed.

Following extensive consultation with local residents and councillors in Malmesbury, the Lead Member for Housing, Coun Judy Rooke, has agreed that the scheme should be looked at.

The district council is working with Westlea Housing Association to deliver a scheme that aims to provide a mix of private and affordable housing as well as a play area.

Following concerns expressed by local residents regarding the size of the play area the scheme is now being reviewed.

It is hoped that an alternative scheme can be delivered which will meet the requirements of the local community.

If an alternative scheme is possible a report with revised plans will be submitted to the district council's executive for consideration, hopefully by the end of this year.

Coun Rooke said: "Whilst we hope to deliver an innovative scheme on this site, it is vital that the views of the local residents are taken into consideration.

"On the basis of the feedback received I think it is absolutely right that we review the existing proposals and try and find a revised scheme."

Town mayor Patrick Goldstone said he was delighted with the news.

He was also pleased that Malmesbury Town Council were due to take over the lease for the playground.

He said: "We obviously want a playground but I accept the old swimming pool site has to be developed. This news means that we know the lead members will listen to the councillors on matters of vital importance and will react accordingly.

"The town council are looking forward to looking after a new revitalised playground."

Residents had told the Gazette in February they wanted the town council to take over the running of the play park to preserve it for the local community.
