THE future of Devizes Physical Handicapped and Able Bodied (PHAB) Club's fleet of minibuses for disabled people is in jeopardy after a spate of vandalism.

On Saturday night a stone was thrown through a window of a 15-seater Mercedes minibus parked at Safeway and the CD player stolen.

It was the latest incident in a series of attacks on the buses which have cost the charity nearly £1,000 this year. Earlier this month another PHAB bus was attacked. Previously in June the same bus had a window broken and its CD player stolen.

Michael Braund, the club's transport co-ordinator, said: "We have decided to pay for the repairs but it just keeps happening. We have had tyres slashed as well as windows broken. This latest damage can't be repaired for ten days. That means that we are under pressure to keep up with our transport commitments."

The charity transports disabled members to social events and to schools and day centres. It takes disabled youngsters to schools and elderly shopping.

Mr Braund said: "We really need a more secure place to park our buses. We have been offered one place, but it is rather expensive. We are appealing to local people for parking in the town that would cost us less, or a sponsor who would cover the cost of the place we have been offered."
