Dorset and Wilts Vase - Swindon College Old Boys progressed in this first round encounter by dismissing Calne at their Anchor Road ground.

A dominant 25 minute spell at the end of the first half, when College scored three tries, left the home side shell shocked and fearing the worst for the second half.

But a Calne side which included eight second team players, and three more on the bench, stood firm to win the second stanza.

Calne's seconds were left without a fixture, initiating the brave selection which included Andy Horman at hooker, Dave Holmes at loosehead, Paul Hulbert (second team captain) in the second row, Max Whiston on the blinkside flank, Darren Penny in the outside centre channel, Vince Treen on the right wing and Jon Martin at fullback.

College started strongly, and despite Calne winning an early scrum, College started what was to become a prominent feature of the day by securing most of the set piece scrum ball.

Andy Horman's strike was good, but College just battered Calne back and stole the ball to create attacks of their own.

College's pack dominated up front leaving Calne just a few scraps to work from. Fortunately, for Calne, the opposition's discipline was found wanting and scrum-half Andy Donegan was able to gain an early three point lead through a penalty.

Despite great pressure, Calne did well to hold on to this lead for 15 minutes as College applied the pressure through the forwards.

College were reward for their patience and impressive play as they earned a scrum 15 meters from Calne's line.

The inevitable surge from the pack came, but instead of the obvious push over, the number eight broke and exploited a big blindside and set up a superb converted score.

In a stunning period of play, College crossed Calne's line twice more.

The second try was a wonderful solo effort from the left winger. On a set play, he came off his blindside wing took the ball on a sweetly timed switch move and beat three men with his pace on the way. Again the conversion was missed.

Colleges' third try was the best of the day.

Again the pack did the hard work and the number eight picked up and surged forward, he was eventually brought down but a classy little lay off to the supporting hooker set up the unconverted score on the next phase of play, right on the turn of half time.

Evidently the break was just what Calne needed.

Regardless of the ever retreating scrums, number eight Alan Wicks and Donegan were able to clear the ball from the onslaught, thanks to Horman's sweet striking, and little flicks by the wily Wicks.

With more possession, combined with Colleges' faltering discipline, Calne slowly worked their way back into the contest.

But Colleges' left wing completed his brace, exploiting an overlap from a turnover with his pace. Again the conversion was missed.

As Calne competed their way back in to the contest, College became increasing frustrated, and the game was marred by two incidents.

The first was when a substitute College player saw fit to run onto the pitch to join in a skirmish, and more worryingly, second team captain Paul Hulbert had to leave the field with a nasty head wound after an alleged stamping incident by College's replacement scrum half.

In the face of College's intention to turn the game in to a battle of another kind, Calne became even more resolute and determined to cross the white wash.

A crunching tackle, from John Hope Smith, a first team winger playing on the flank, created a turnover ball.

Fittingly it was a second team winger that finished the move.

Mike Burden went round his man with some class and, despite the cries of 'dive' from the crowd, Burden coolly placed the ball down for the converted score.
