RETIREMENT has given Operation Christmas Child supporters Paul and Shirley Nicholls a new lease of life.
The couple from North Bradley had been packing shoeboxes for many years, but in 2002 they started helping out at the appeal depot in Melksham.
Before the boxes can be sent off, they need to be checked to ensure they don't contain inappropriate items such as liquids or war toys.
Although the Nicholls admit sorting through hundreds of gift-filled boxes can be hard work, they have found the experience very rewarding.
Mrs Nicholls, 68, said: "I think we get as much out of it as we give them really. It's a real sight, all those boxes piled up to the ceiling.
"The fellowship at the depot is just wonderful. It makes our Christmas actually, it's a very happy place.
"It's lovely to see the little notes that the children put into the boxes. We also have a service in our church when the boxes are blessed and go on their way.
"The things that are left over go to the main depot in Wrexham. They are more or less sending stuff out all through the year."
The couple were introduced to Operation Christmas Child through volunteer Judith Whalley and their church, St Nicholas in North Bradley about seven years ago.
At the depot supermarkets often donate big boxes of gifts, which can be added to the boxes where needed.
The couple are in no doubt about the impact Operation Christmas Child continues to have on needy children.
Mrs Nicholls said: "Judith told us when she came back the first year in August they were still treasuring the boxes and wrapping paper. Even the big boys like the cuddly toys. The first year they went out I understand the boys cried when they saw them."
