POLICE are warning clergymen across west and north Wiltshire to be on alert after a conman deceived a vicar out of more than £100.
The man, who targeted a church in Shaw, claims he has a mother who has died of cancer and needs money to get to either Scotland or the Isle of Wight to identify the body.
A man thought to be connected to the series of scams is being held in custody and is due to be questioned by Avon and Somerset police.
PC Mark Wallace of Melksham police said: "He preys on their good nature to give him the money.
"He's very practised in what he does and is well-briefed in the local area. He targets churches and the locals."
Police have so far received a report of at least one offence committed by the man in the county, but believe it is likely he has attempted to deceive several others.
The man is described as white, of slim build, with short light brown hair.
Melksham police are appealing for people who have fallen victim and may feel embarrassed, or to anyone who may have seen a man acting suspiciously around churches, to come forward with information.
